Agnes Lawrence Pelton (1881-1961)

Agnes Pelton was born in Germany (in Stuttgart) to American brings up. Her family returned to the states and Pelton took her formal art instruction at the Pratt Institute. Peltons early paintings were rather straight-forward and figurative but by the 1920s Pelton was trying out in abstract and regularly visiting New Mexico. She got painting with a group of Taos artists famous as the Transendental Painting group. In 1931, Pelton gone to Cathedral City near Palm Springs and her works were widespread between the surreal abstract and straight desert pictures.
