Al Loving (1935-2005)

Al Loving was an American Abstract Expressionist painter, and one of the a few African-American artists recognized for his contributions to the cause. Loving is also known for his starkly abstract work, featuring bright colors and hard-edge lines in arrangements of cubes and rectangles. Born and grown and Detroit, Loving first seen painting from his father, a cultivated artist and teacher who also gone as a sign painter. Loving went on to get his "BFA" from the University of Illinois in 1963, and then his "MFA" from the University of Michigan in 1965. Within a year of his move to New York in 1968, Loving had a solo exhibition at the Whitney Museum of American Art and experienced almost extended success and wide recognition. Loving went on to exhibit at many prestigious institutions throughout his lifetime, taking the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, the Neuberger Museum of Art in Purchase, NY, and other.
